Piano lessons in Strathspey, Cairngorms National Park
My name’s Maddy, and I have been teaching piano in Scotland since 2018.
My goal is to reach students across Strathspey and Badenoch and to be able to inspire and provide them with an exciting piano education!
My piano lessons have grown from my love of creative and vibrant teaching. It all started back when I was living in the Scottish Borders. I was teaching part time at home as well as travelling to Edinburgh to teach in a music school. I had just finished my postgraduate study in Community Music, and I was excited to create a music lesson with a difference…to make it creative, fun, and accessible.
Not only this, myself and my husband wanted to move to where we are happiest – and that’s in the great outdoors with nature and scenery. And so, here I am!
Like most teachers, I began teaching my instrument the way I was taught back when I was a primary school student in the 90s.
This meant learning to read notes on the page before actually understanding how to feel and listen to the sounds of the piano.
Even though I loved my teachers, and went on to study piano at University, I believe there is now a more musical and modern way to learn and enjoy piano lessons.
I gradually discovered new ways of teaching piano as a language and as a creative art form. I realised how much more creative a piano lesson could actually be!
Today my lessons involve making music and beautiful sounds from the word go. My aim is to make students realise that they can be creative and make exciting music by themselves, and with other people. At the same time they can begin developing their skills in reading music to make them an independent pianist at home.
I believe this combination of creativity and musical knowledge will allow my students to build their own journey as a developing musician.
I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (professional body for musicians including public liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance) as well Vibrant Music Teaching (continued professional development for piano teachers).
